Essential Oils are extracted from plants in concentrated form. They have the ‘essence’ of plants, as its name suggests, in terms of aroma and flavor. The concentrated aromatic compounds extracted from plants are dissolved in a carrier oil to make it ready to use. Interestingly, they are not actually an “oil”, but for lack of a better word, that is what we call them.
In aromatherapy, they are inhaled which stimulates parts of the limbic system. This may, in turn, have an effect on emotions, behaviors and long-term memory. Although people claim that aromatherapy helps in stress-related issues, there is not a lot of research backing this claim but initial studies show positive results. Moreover, those of us who use them regularly for stress reduction wouldn’t want to live without them!
