Blessings and Rituals Self-Clearing of Negative Energy

Table of Contents

By following the steps below, you will be taking part in the Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing for Self-Clearing. It’s important to learn this basic technique because you will often need to cleanse your spirit before performing other rituals and ceremonies. This particular ritual derives from Native North Americans and is a potent cleansing technique.

However, before you start learning about the steps to self-clearing, you must first get your tools in order. Below is a list of tools for you to gather. Click here to learn more about getting your tools in order for your blessings and rituals.

➳ The tools to gather.

  • Ceramic Bowl or Shell
  • Large Feather
  • Smudge Stick
  • Matches or Lighter

The purpose of this ritual is to ask the spirits of the sacred plants to drive out negativity. In so doing, it helps you maintain balance. It’s much like washing your hands before you eat, only in this instance, you are cleansing your spirit.

It’s also a great idea to plan ahead with your own quiet space for your blessings and rituals. You might refer to this space as a meditation room, a blessings room, or whatever speaks to you.

By setting yourself apart from the rest of the home, it gives you the privacy to gain the best benefit possible from these steps. Now, assuming you’re in your quiet place, let’s get started on the six steps to self-clearing!

6 Steps to Self-Clearing

Step One • Light the Smudge Stick

Step one is the lighting of the smudge stick. First, light the end of your smudge stick which can be either Sage or Sweet Grass, however, I prefer Sage.

Hold the light under the sage stick until you can see its embers smoldering. Then, when necessary, fan the stick with your feather to keep it smoldering.

Step Two • Calling on the Spirits

In this step, you call on the spirit of the sage while holding the smoldering sage stick and saying these words:

Sacred sage, drive away all negativity from my heart; take away everything unworthy and impure.

Step Three • Wafting the Smoke

While you are speaking to the spirit, hold the sage stick away from you and waft the smoke towards your heart using the big feather. Next, waft the smudge smoke over your head, down your arms, and down the front of your body.

While you continue wafting, use your imagination to envision the smoke lifting out of you and releasing you from all the negativity of low energy thoughts and emotions you’ve been holding inside.

Step Four • Breath In the Sage Smoke

Next, is lightly breathing in the sage smoke. Then, use your imagination again to see the smoke cleansing inside your body. (Be cautious with this step, breathing in very lightly.)

Step Five • Down the Back

Now, direct the sage smoke down your back wafting it towards the ground. As you are doing this, use your imagination to visualize the negativity flowing down into the earth with the smoke and then up and away into the air.

Step Six • Repeat Steps One through Five

Now you will repeat the steps above, but this time, say something different when calling on the spirit of the sage as follows:

Sacred sage, bring me the positive energy I need to do this work. Help me to become balanced. Purify my soul.

While you’re asking for the positive energy, you must also use your imagination to visualize a warm, loving energy all around you while you deeply breathe in courage, love, and positivity.
